“O people!  Your God is one and your forefather (Adam) is one.  An Arab is not better than a non-Arab and a non-Arab is not better than an Arab, and a red (i.e. white tinged with red) person is not better than a black person and a black person is not better than a red person, except in piety.”

 - Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), narrated in Mosnad Ahmad

  2. amal, I will refrain from generalizing but I have heard the same thing that you just said (about the Arab thinking that they are the best) from a number of people and yes this is indeed a sad thing. May Allah guide those people. Ameen

  3. ya very true
its sad that 1400 years later we can’t drive the point home that arabs are no better than anyone else.

but one thing that will make people lose credibility is when they go into a reverse racism which can be even worse, like arabs drive me crazy etc.

its happened with blacks and reverse racism against whites and muslim south asians and others with blacks

we have to speak out against racism without becoming racists ourselves.

  4. sacrosanct, that is very true and that is why I have disassociated myself with some of the historical Ibn Garcia’s ideas which go in this direction.

  6. Salaam ‘Alaikum

I know bashing Arabs is a lot of fun, but let’s not pretend that it doesn’t come from *all* groups of Muslims towards other groups — even Arabs (what!?). Racism, discrimination, prejudice — all stem from the ills of human beings. Such things are not exclusive to Arabs. Gosh, if I just had a nickel for every time I was subject to the “Desis superior Muslims to Arabs” or “Blackamericans / Whiteamericans / converts superior Muslims to Arabs” routine (including from Arabs, snort) I’d be rich. So please make sure you diagnose the ills of all the Muslims, if indeed you feel qualified to do so, instead of just picking on the Arabs.

  7. waalaikum’as’salaam Umm Zaid, You are absolutely correct in sttaing that it does not come from Arabs. The reason that I have concentrated on the Arab, at least for now, is because there is the extra danger of equating Islam with Arabness. Also if you haven’t noticed sister the reference to the story about Racism in Ummah was in a setting where the most of the sisters were Pakistani Muslims. So the goal is not to offend anyone. And yes, the attitudes of some South Asian Muslims will be discussed insha’Allah. Also please notice that I always emphasize on saying SOME whenever I am talking about people of Arab extraction instead of saying all. As for diagnosing the ills there are people who are far more qualified to do so to discuss the many other ills. Here we shall concentrate on one of the ills in particular.
